What’s Hiding in Your Jewelry Box?
You know that jewelry box sitting in your bedroom, drawer, or safe that you have not really looked through in years? It might be worth taking another look!
A recent story from the UK is a perfect reminder of why. A woman discovered a vintage Patek Philippe watch among her late mother’s belongings, and what initially seemed like an old family watch turned out to be something extraordinary.
The $80,000 Surprise Sitting in a Jewelry Box
The watch was a rare Patek Philippe Calatrava dating back to the 1930s. It had been passed down through the family for generations and had spent around 90 years with the same Cornish family.
When it was examined by an auction expert, its rarity quickly became apparent. The watch was initially estimated at £5,000 to £10,000, but after an intense bidding battle, it sold for £59,000, or nearly $80,000.
That is quite a discovery for something that had simply been sitting in a family jewelry box!
Stories like this are exactly why inherited and forgotten jewelry can be so fascinating. An old watch, ring, brooch, necklace, or pair of earrings can have a story, rarity, craftsmanship, or value that is impossible to recognize just by looking at it.
And sometimes, the piece you almost forgot about is the one worth asking about.
